>Transformations Academy, Chicago

>Kei Yuuki walks into her classroom for the first time in several weeks, having been given leave due to her father's situation, and silently makes her way to her seat, stopping for a moment as she notices one of the seats is empty.

"{Sam's not in?}"

>Kei looks around for a moment, her action catching the attention of a pair of girls near the empty seat.

"Look somewhere else, biantai."

>Kei sighs and finishes her way to her seat, putting her bag down on her desk and burying her head into it, the girls going back to their own gossiping.

"<. . .I hate it here.>"

>While Kei keeps her head buried, a man enters the classroom, looking over the students within it, and coughs to get their attention - the action also serving as a notice for them to head to their places. Noticing Kei, he coughs again.

"Good to see you back, Ms Yuuki, will you grace us with your attention, or is the back of your head attending today instead of you?"

>Kei looks up from her bag, and puts it down under her desk.

". . .sorry Dr Porter."

"Much better, I'd recommend sleeping at home in your own bed."

>The man goes back to addressing the rest of the class, with Kei's attention fading away for a few moments before a phrase catches her attention.

"Anyway, we have a new student from today, so welcome Chaoxing. . ."

>The man indicates to the door, and a familiar figure to Kei steps through, causing her mood to drop further.

>Carpenter Mansion, Northern Chicago

>Kei, Star, and Moon enter the mansion through the main doors.

"黙れ, Star, I don't like it anymore than you do, it's not like I chose to have you in my class."

"Sure sure, but I'd bet you'd pick it anyway, so you can control me and use me as eye candy."

"I'm not even-"

>Before Kei can finish, Star walks through a door to the side and slams it behind her, the third member of the little group giving her an apolgetic look.

"I'll talk to her. . ."

>Kei sighs.

"Thanks, Moon. . ."

>Moon gives Kei a smile before following Star through the door, closing it much more carefully than the girl before him.

"Having a few teething problems?"

>Kei looks across the room to see Alex walking down the stairs, being very careful with his cane.

"No. . . yeah. . ."

"You'll get there in time."

>Alex puts a hand on Kei's shoulder.

"I don't even want. . ."

"Maybe, but you're the one I trust with handling this, so you're going to have to, I know you can do it."

>Kei smiles weakly, only half-believing the man's words.

". . .you said you wanted to talk to us all, right? What exactly is that about?"

"Why don't we let Kwaku and T.J. get here first, then we can all talk together?"

>Appropriately enough, the two teenage boys make themselves known, indirectly - as their voices echo through the walls of the Carpenter Mansion, upon opening the large doors.

"…I'm just saying Kay, my parents could probably make some cool impedance field technology or something for you! You'd be able to blast bad guys into space!"

>Fixing his various dreadlocks and keeping them properly in place, Kwaku then replies:

"Not really sure if that's the approach, T.J. - besides, the last thing your parents need to know is that your friends are vigilante teenage superheroes."

>T.J. crosses his arms and pouts lightly, saying:

"Yeah man, but think about it! If we're gonna become superheroes, then we're gonna need some real big guns - lotsa firepower to win, right?"

>Rounding the corner, Kwaku then says:

"Well seeing how well we did against those private security people, I wouldn't call ourselves heroes just yet. Besides."

>Gesturing behind him with his thumb, Kwaku says:

"Cardinal's been doing this way longer than we have. I've still gotta thank him for my suit."

>T.J. then says:

"Hey about that. How can it self repair anyways? You said it was a nanite mesh?"

>Kwaku nods slightly as he states:

"I think it feeds off of my bioelectric field or something. Maybe I can run some tests on the electrochemical gradients that my cells charge up with a voltage meter-"

>They then see Alex and Kei in their view, as they stop talking and slowly arrive in front of them.

>T.J. looks at Alex and says:

"Hey Mister Carpenter! Sorry we're late! Traffic was rough."

>Kwaku raises an eyebrow as he says:

"We literally flew here, T.J. - you don't need to go fishing for sympathy points here."

>T.J gives Kwaku a panicked look of partial annoyance and partial nervousness as Kwaku glances over at Kei. Suddenly he becomes more reserved in his movements, instead quickly giving her a slight wave as he speaks:

"Oh, hey Kei. Didn't see you there."

>Kwaku looks very interested in the coin now in his hands, as he flips it into the air and uses his powers to magnetize it in place - rotating it rapidly with a basic magnetic field.

>Alex smiles at the two boys, the kind of smile a parent gives their children.

"It's alright boys, and I told you before, you can just call me Alex, Mr Carpenter makes me sound like I'm your teacher - or your boss."

>As Alex says "boss", his attention turns to Kei, who tries to force a smile for the pair.

"Hey K.W., T.J. . ."

>Kei pauses for a few seconds.

"If you want things making for gear, I could probably. . . look at it or something. . ."

"Doesn't that sound great, eh?"

>Alex gives the pair another smile to try and salvage the situation, then looks down at his phone as it buzzes.

"By the looks of it, you two have perfect timing, actually, I've just got to go let someone in elsewhere, but you all can go down to the sub-basement, I've prepared something for you there. . ."

>Alex starts to walk away, still keeping his weight on his cane with each step.

". . .oh, and if you could grab Moon and Star while you're heading down there, that'd be great, hopefully Star's calmed down by now."

>Alex leaves the trio to themselves, and Kei's shoulders noticeably drop as she relaxes slightly.

>Kwaku notices Kei's disposition and general behavior as he says:

"….If you want to, that could help Kei. Thank you."

>T.J. sensing the awkwardness between the two of them, says:

"….Uh….I guess I should go fetch the wonder twins then right?"

>T.J. says, looking between Kwaku and Kei as he then states:

"….Alright, noted. I'm gonna go grab them."

>T.J. walks off quickly, partially jogging as he makes his way to Star and Moon's rooms as Kwaku keeps his hands inside of his jacket pockets.

"………."

>Kwaku is silent for a few more seconds before he says:

"I'm not sure if there's anything wrong - but we're here if you need help with something Kei. That's all I can say."

>Kwaku says, keeping his eyes trained on the floor for a few seconds - debating whether to look at his childhood friend in the eyes or not.

"It's. . ."

>Kei pauses for a few moments, deciding how to respond in her head, then retreats behind a smile.

"It's fine, K.W., you don't need to worry about it, just a long day at school - and my dad's just started his treatments, so we're waiting to hear back."

>Still keeping her feelings hidden behind the smile, Kei turns around, pointing to a door on the other end of the room.

"Why don't we head down? I don't think you've seen the sub-basement, right? It's. . . uh. . . where me and Alex first met, actually. . ."

>Kei chuckles awkwardly.

"The same goes for you, by the way, if you've got any problems, just tell me - I'm meant to be the team leader, right?"

"No problem, boss. I kind of wish the shorthand for our names wasn't phonetically identical, but you win some, you lose some, right?"

>Kwaku gives a soft laugh, attempting to use levity to ease up the tension in the area. As he then sighs, he states:

"Alright, that was terrible on my part. Sorry Kei."

>Kwaku then walks forward, gesturing to Kei behind him as he says:

"Well, let's go to the sub-basement then. I assume it's some tricked out sci-fi dreamscape for a tinkerer like you."

>At that moment, T.J. is at the other side of the hallway - knocking on the door to Moon and Star's room.

"Hey guys, it's T.J.! I think the boss man wants to show us something! Also, do you guys know where the snacks are in this place?"

>Kei snorts at Kwaku's attempt at cheering her up.

"K.W., I hope you're not planning on becoming a therapist, because that sucked."

>Kei pushes a button by the door, and an elevator hidden behind it reveals itself.

"Also, the sub-basement's mostly white panels, I guess that's pretty sci-fi."

>>4990
>The sound of muffled arguing can be heard through the door, stopping as T.J. knocks. After a few moments, the door opens with Moon answering it.

"Oh hey T.J., sure. . ."

>Moon reaches into his pocket and takes out a battered pack of mini marshmallows.

". . .it's a bit beaten up, but the snack cupboard's on the other end of the place and we probably don't have the time. . ."

>Moon glances over at Star, who rolls her eyes.

"Ugh. Yeah. Sure. I'm coming."

>Star stands up, walking up to the door, and the pack of marshmallows set on fire.

>Kwaku feels his face turn as red as a beet as he quickly stammers a response.

"I was just trying to cheer you up! I'm an engineering student, not a psych student!"

>Embarrassed slightly, Kwaku then sighs and walks with Kei into the elevator.

"….Definitely sci-fi inspired. This really feels like an MI-6 style mansion, honestly. I kind of like it."

>At that same time, T.J. looks over at the burning marshmallow set as he turns to face Moon, saying:

"….Has she always been like this? Since you've met her I mean."

>Looking at Star once more, T.J. then says:

"Because she's kind of scary - in that dangerous supervillain sense. Not that she's a bad person or anything, I just mean…."

>Cursing to himself, T.J. then sheepishly walks out of the room after Star, putting on the hood of his jacket to hide his embarrassment.

"Well, since we got out of the lab, yeah. But, like, the only thing we can remember from before is being experimented on and she's, like, half as tall as us."

>Moon sighs.

"World's scary when your life's like that, man, so you think you gotta bite everyone. . ."

>Moon shrugs at his own comment.

"At least that's what she thinks. . . feels? I dunno how to put it, we've got some kind of, like, bond so I get some of it sometimes. . ."

>Looking at Kei for a moment too long, Kwaku then looks back ahead, crossing his arms of his jacket as he says:

"…You should probably wait for Moon and T.J. - it's not that small of an elevator."

>As Kwaku speaks up, T.J. rounds the corner, presumably with Moon right behind him.

"Hey guys! Wait for us!"

>T.J. runs to the elevator, nearly crashing into Star - only for Kwaku to grab him by the shoulders and alter his trajectory at the last moment.

"Yeah yeah."

>Moon follows behind T.J., stepping into the cramped elevator.

"Thanks."

>The elevator starts descending silently, and after a few minutes, Moon starts whistling a tune in an attempt to replicate elevator music, stopping after he receives a look from Star.

". . .sorry."

>With a ring of a synthesised bell, the elevator doors open again, this time in circular room with various equipment displays of former famous crime fighters from across the years, as well as the inert form of S.E.A.R.C.H. against the far wall.

>T.J. breaks the silence by asking an opportune, but also equally unnecessary question, stating:

"…Hey uh, you guys think we're gonna have supervillains to fight? Like you know, archenemies or something?"

>Kwaku raises an eyebrow behind his dreadlocks as he says:

"What, you mean like a comic book superhero does?"

>T.J. nods, saying:

"Yeah basically. If we get famous enough, we're gonna have a lot of really nasty people trying to kill us."

>Looking at Star, T.J. says:

"Not to bring up bad memories or anything, but like those guys who captured you and Moon."

>Kwaku looks at Star and Moon, thinks for a moment, and then says:

"Well, if that's the case, we're going to need to keep our identities a secret I would guess. T.J. and I have masks obviously - but I don't know if the rest of you guys would even be open to the idea. It kind of feels dorky, I'll admit - but I like it."

>Looking at Kei, Kwaku says:

"Makes it one step harder for people to figure out who you are - and for gangs to try and use that against you, like through family, friends, or-"

>Kwaku stops himself at that moment, turning to look at the others as he scratches his chin nervously with one index finger, lightly laughing as he says:

"Actually, forget I said anything. I'll probably jinx things if I keep going."

>T.J. then interjects, stating:

"Nah, K.W.'s right. You guys need masks or something. Even if there's no one else you guys have to keep safe, if anyone figures out who you are - then they could trace it to us if they ever see us hanging out, outside of superhero stuff. My parents would kill me if I did that to any of you."

>Kwaku then looks at T.J. and places a hand on his shoulder saying:

"Then let's make sure that doesn't happen - and we don't screw up then T.J. alright?"

>T.J. nods as Kwaku removes his hand from T.J.'s shoulder and then places his hands back inside of his jacket pockets. The sense of trepidation in the elevator eases up for the two of them, as they wait for the ride down the levels to finish, and for the door to open up as well.

>Moon thinks over the problem for a moment, then goes to speak up.

"I guess-"

"Who the hell is gonna care who me and Moon are? We're nobodies, it's not like they can threaten our families or anything, it's only you guys and Mr Moneycane who know us anyway."

"He's just being nice, Star, try winding it in a bit for once."

>Star gives Kei a mock salute.

"Yes ma'am."

>As she finishes her mock gesture, the elevator arrives, and Star steps out of it first, shoving her way past anyone in her path.

>In the middle of the room, Star traces her finger along one of the display cases, melting in a pattern behind every point she touches, only stopping as she's called out.

"-can't you let anyone have fun?"

>At another one of the cases, Moon lines his reflection up against the contents, a helmet of some kind, trying to imagine it on his head.

"I mean, he still seemed pretty annoyed to me, maybe that counts for something."

>Kei doesn't point out the fact that she's also just "someone in a suit".

>Alex shakes his head.

"Sage, as he is, is a known quantity, he spent many years as a petty criminal alongside Amp until recently, when he was offered a chance of reforming himself in the eyes of the law by the MRD and Long Corp - which he took, as you can see. The fact that he spent the entire time being able to talk to you means, well. . ."

>Alex sighs.

". . .I'm sorry, but he was taking none of you seriously, if he thought you were a threat he would have used his powers to increase his strength at the expense of his brainpower, as he's done many times in the past. He clearly just saw you as a bunch of teenagers with powers - including Cardinal."

>Kwaku turns to Star and says:

"Trust me, you're not gonna have an easy time burning someone who can generate inductive fields."

>T.J. turns to Kwaku and says:

"Yeah about that. Do you feel all tingly and shocked with all that electricity going through you?"

>Kwaku shakes his head as he takes off his backpack and holds it in one hand, opening it and moving through it as he says:

"Not really, no. I'm immune to my own bioelectric energy. Besides, I meant more the electromotive force. You know, magnetic field tuning and all that."

>Pointing at Star and Moon, Kwaku then says:

"If you guys are Fire and Water - then I'm Electricity and Magnetism. Kind of wish there was a cultural belief system that had all of that in one, but….eh."

>T.J. then says:

"Isn't electricity one of the elements in Chinese mythology?"

>He says, looking at Kei when he asks the question.

"Not that I assume that you know everything about Chinese culture obviously! Sorry that looked really bad on my part. I'm kind of an idiot."

>T.J. says, hiding his eyes behind his hands in embarrassment.

>Kwaku takes out the small devices that he was looking for within his backpack - with his suit still neatly packed within it as he says:

"Pretty sure it was metal that you're thinking of. But I get it, metal - magnetism. It's a believable lapse in judgment."

>Kwaku then takes out his signature oversized goggles and mask as Faraday - holding them in his hand as he turns to Alex and says:

"Is the suit OK for this? I like the identity angle of being Faraday."

>T.J. turns to Kwaku and says:

"Really? I thought it was just me who liked being a superhero. Like those guys in Sanctuary City. Wait, didn't Cardinal say that he was trained by one of them? Mosaic?"

>Raising an eyebrow, Kwaku states:

"….He did. But he had some kind of a falling out?"

>Turning back to Alex, Kwaku then asks:

"Why didn't he come with us? Is he just not trusting of people or something now?"

>Star produces a flame around her fist, holding it up.

"Want to put that to the test?"

>Moon gives Star a disappointed look.

"Star. . ."

"He's the one who started it!"

>Moon continues the disappointed look.

"Star. . ."

"You got lucky, sparky."

>Star dismisses the flames as Moon looks over at Kwaku, giving him an awkward smile.

>Kei puts her head in her hands at T.J.'s question.

"もう. . . I'm Japanese, not Chinese, why do people always assume I'm Chinese? I wouldn't even know it anyway, I'm from the city, I've never been on holiday further than Minnesota, まったく."

>The annoyance in Kei's voice is familiar to Kwaku, given how many times he's seen Kei get asked similar questions.

>In response to Kwaku's question about identities, Alex speaks up.

"You're free to, in fact, I would recommend it, the scenarios will be mostly simulated but there's some realism to the effects in them - and if you'd like to make any adjustments to your suits, there's plenty of equipment around the room for you to use."

". . .just try not to break it too much, please."

>Taking her own initiative in response to the answer, Kei makes her way over to S.E.A.R.C.H., climbing up it once she reaches it to approach the entrance on the top.

"He didn't sound like he works well in teams, maybe he just decided that it's better if he didn't join one."

>As she finishes her musing, Kei starts to slip through the entrance of the suit.

>Kwaku looks at Star and says:

"For the record, I didn't think you weren't tough. It was just a statement - I'm probably going to be alright even if you do want to roast me with your flames."

>Turning towards Kei as she makes her way over to S.E.A.R.C.H. - he then says:

"Yeah sorry about that one Kei. I didn't have time to tell him that you're Japanese."

>T.J. looks mortified and holds his head in his hands as he says:

"…Oh God I'm an idiot! I'm sorry!"

>He then instinctively activates his armor, as it immediately begins forming over him, appearing as a nanolattice fabric from the pores of his skin - replacing T.J. with Kuiper.

"Aaahhh! I didn't mean to do that, sorry!"

>Kuiper says, quickly fidgeting around as Kwaku's outfit flows over him with a similar nanomesh liquid-flow movement. As he becomes Faraday, he places his large goggles over his eyes, completely hiding them from sight as he says:

"Alright, we're ready to go."

>Faraday then takes a small metallic disc out from underneath his jacket interior - expanding it into a large metallic saucer that he then presses his energy into - magnetizing it with a repulsive force against the ground.

>Jumping onto his saucer, he then says:

"Alright, let's get this show on the road."
